Sir,
After a struggle of a good many years duration I have succeeded in getting this most noble breed of dogs recognised, and classes made for them at shows, and as you will see from the enclosed circular, Mr. R. Gambier Bolton has now undertaken the formation of a club to promote the further development and improvement of these canine giants.
May I ask you to assist us in this matter by the publication of this letter and the enclosed circular?
Yours,
Frank Adcock. “The Great Dane”. Vicar's Close, Chichester, Sussex.
February 1883.
Dear Sir,
We are endeavoring to get together a small club for the improvement of this breed in England.
It is proposed to call it The Great Dane Club, and that under this title should be included Great Danes, and the various differently coloured specimens known as Boar Hounds, Tiger Mastiffs and German Mastiffs.
Mr. Frank Adcock and Mr. R. Leigh Pemberton (two of our largest breeders and exhibitors) are willing to do their best for the club, if started. Would you kindly send me a few lines as to your feelings in this matter especially?
1. If you would be willing to join such a club yourself
2. If you could get one or two friends to join
3. And if they (with you) would agree to the one name - Great Dane - for all the different colour and markings.
If we do not unite in the matter, there will be but small hope of our ever getting the public to take up this, the largest, and most intelligent and courageous breed of dogs.
Yours,
R. Gambier Bolton.
P.S. An early answer will oblige.
